Inspiring Conversations with Olesya Sokolova of Art Cakes Dessert Catering (ArtCake LLC)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Olesya Sokolova.

Hi Olesya, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Olesya: from the ashes — into art
There are weddings you forget by morning. And there are weddings where the cake stops the room.
Where guests pause mid-conversation, reach for their phones — and then put them down. Because some things are better felt than captured.
That is what Olesya creates. Not desserts. Moments. The kind that stay in the body long after the last bite.
But to understand what she makes today, you have to understand what she survived to get here.

In 2018, Olesya left Russia for America. She came with hope for love, for family, for a life rebuilt on new ground.
Within a year, that life collapsed. Divorce. Loneliness in a country still unfamiliar. Fear that had no clear shape but was present every morning. A mother alone with her daughter, no safety net, no family within reach, no clear path forward.
It was the kind of moment that either breaks a person — or reveals who they actually are.
“That was the point of no return. I understood that I either fight — or I don’t exist in this life as myself anymore.”
She chose to fight.

She returned to the one thing that had always felt like home — baking.
Not as a dream. As survival. She trained fast, sold through Instagram, worked through the night in a small apartment kitchen that was simultaneously her home, her studio, and her entire business. Sleep was a luxury. Rest was not an option. But the orders kept coming — slowly, then steadily, then constantly.
And somewhere between exhaustion and necessity, something unexpected happened. The work became art.

Art Cakes Dessert Catering was born from that tension — between survival and expression, between what had to be done and what she was capable of creating.
Her philosophy is European in its soul. Where the American dessert world often reaches for sweetness, Olesya reaches for balance. Light textures. Clean, honest ingredients. Flavors with depth rather than volume. Designs that feel like they belong to the celebration — not simply placed on top of it.
For her, luxury is never about price. It is about intention. The quiet certainty that something was made specifically for this day, this couple, this story.

The business almost broke her a second time.
For years she underpriced everything — miscalculated costs, absorbed losses, worked not to grow but simply to survive the month. Until one day she stopped, recalculated everything from zero, and raised her prices.
She was terrified of what would happen. Nothing collapsed. Instead, something shifted. The clients who left were replaced by clients who understood exactly what they were choosing. The audience changed — and with it, the brand found its true shape.
“The people who stayed were the ones who truly valued quality, taste, and design. And that became the foundation of everything.”

Today, Art Cakes serves weddings, galas, and luxury private events across Maryland, DC, and Northern Virginia — from intimate ceremonies to celebrations of 300+ guests. Her work has graced events attended by NBA players, journalists, and political figures. Not because she chased that world. Because that world found her.
She is not only a pastry chef. She is closer to an artist who works through flavor — and a businesswoman who built everything from zero, in a language that was still new, in a country that was still learning to feel like home.

If she could speak to herself in 2018, standing at the edge of everything that was about to fall apart, she would say one thing:
Believe in yourself. It will work out — even better than you imagine now.
And looking back across everything — the fear, the nights, the rebuilding — she holds one thought that defines the entire journey:
“How good it is that one day life didn’t go according to plan — and the new plan turned out to be better.”
