Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Van Orden.
Hi Amy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My professional background started in sales, where I spent the majority of my career developing strong communication skills, building relationships, and learning how to understand and respond to people’s needs. While that work taught me a great deal, a few years ago I transitioned into the nonprofit sector when I took a position as a grant administrator. That role, which was in Catonsville, turned out to be one of the most fulfilling experiences of my career. I was able to directly contribute to the organization’s impact, and it was rewarding to see how my work supported its mission and growth.
As I continued in that role, I eventually felt I had grown as much as I could within the position and began looking for the next opportunity to expand my leadership and impact. When the Deputy Executive Director role opened at Partners In Care Maryland, Inc., it immediately resonated with me. My family has always supported the mission of Partners In Care, and I felt a strong connection to the organization’s work and values.
Additionally, the role being located in Pasadena was especially meaningful because it allowed me to work in my own community. Being able to serve where I live adds another layer of purpose to the work I do. Since joining, staffing changes led to a transition in responsibilities, and I now serve as Director of Operations, where I focus on strengthening internal systems and supporting the organization’s overall mission and growth.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t always been a completely smooth road, but the challenges have ultimately strengthened both me and the organization. One of the biggest adjustments came shortly after I started, when we experienced unexpected staffing changes. As a result, I stepped into a larger role than originally planned, which required me to quickly adapt, take on additional responsibilities, and help provide stability during a period of transition.
At the same time, I was learning the organization in depth — its programs, operations, culture, and long-term goals — which required a steep learning curve. It was an important period of growth for me professionally, as I had to move quickly, prioritize effectively, and build strong internal relationships.
Another significant transition occurred when we aligned under Chesapeake Health Partners. During that time, I worked closely with the Board to help navigate the organizational transition, ensure continuity of services, and support clear communication throughout the process. That experience strengthened my understanding of governance, strategic alignment, and the importance of collaboration between leadership and the Board.
While these changes were challenging, they ultimately helped me grow into a stronger operational leader and deepened my commitment to the mission.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Partners In Care Maryland, Inc. is a volunteer-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit and a leader in home support services for older adults across the state. We provide aging in place support through community service programs that help our members live independently at home and stay actively engaged in their communities.
Partners In Care Maryland, Inc. allows our members to receive services and assistance they desperately need, such as,
Transportation – rides with arm-in-arm, door-through-door service for important appointments and necessities
Repairs – minor repairs, such as, the installation of grab bars and toilet risers as well fixing leaking faucets and other items to ensure members’ homes are safe
Service Exchange and Time Banking – members use their talents to support each other
Social Engagement – build community to prevent isolation through a variety of programs, including our Upscale Resale Boutique and the Member Care Program
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is ensuring that our organization is strong, sustainable, and positioned to serve our community for years to come. I care deeply about building systems that support long-term stability — financially, operationally, and strategically — so that we can continue delivering on our mission without interruption.
Being fiscally responsible is a core priority for me. That means thoughtful planning, transparency, accountability, and making decisions that protect the organization’s resources while maximizing impact. I believe stewardship is essential in a nonprofit environment — every dollar entrusted to us should directly support our members, volunteers, and programs.
I am also committed to strengthening our infrastructure so that our services remain consistent, reliable, and aligned with our mission of helping older adults live independently, stay connected, and thrive in their communities. When our internal operations are solid and our leadership is aligned, we are better able to serve with excellence and compassion.
Ultimately, what matters most to me is that we remain mission-focused, community-centered, and built to last — so the work we do today continues making a meaningful difference well into the future.
