Meet Denascia Salley of Waldorf, MD

Today we’d like to introduce you to Denascia Salley.

Hi Denascia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey truly begins with my faith. I was born in Charleston, South Carolina, and accepted Jesus Christ as Lord of my life at an early age. As the eldest of three siblings, I grew up understanding the importance of leadership, character, and integrity. Those principles, along with a life grounded in the Word of God, have guided every area of my life and purpose.

Academically, I graduated with honors as the Salutatorian of Frank W. Ballou Senior High School in Washington, D.C., and later earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from Bowie State University in Maryland. My education and professional development opened the door to several opportunities within prestigious organizations while I continued to grow spiritually and in ministry.

In August 2012, I was ordained as an Elder at Redeeming Life Ministries International under the authority and order of Eagles Rock Diocese. Ministry has always been central to my life. Over the years, I have served as a psalmist, choir director, drama ministry director, and formerly as an instructor of liturgical dance. I have also completed biblical studies including apologetics, hermeneutics, homiletics, and the School of the Prophets, which strengthened my commitment to teaching and sharing the Gospel.

My introduction to the performing arts came in 2013 when I was cast in the lead role of the stage production Cain & Abel. That experience revealed another powerful avenue to communicate faith through storytelling and marked the beginning of my journey as a faith-driven storyteller and creative artist. I later appeared in several stage productions including An Urban Christmas Carol, Deep Cover, Land of Promiscuity—featured in the 2019 DC Theatre Festival at the African American Civil War Memorial Museum—When the Vows Break, and Unto Death Do Us Part.

In 2017, I was selected to participate in Actors, Models & Talent for Christ (AMTC), where I continued cultivating my craft and deepening my understanding of storytelling through the arts.

As the industry evolved during the COVID-19 pandemic around 2020, my creative journey expanded into film. Since 2022, I have appeared in projects including Ties That Bind, His Secret, The Flip Side, Mercy Road, 8th Street, The Volunteer, My Private Line to God, Threads of Forgiveness, and Skipping a Beat.

In addition to film, I have also participated in music video projects for recording artist Ahnwar Yancey, serving as both an actress as well as a producer and film consultant for the projects Everything U Need and Moment, contributing both on-screen performance and creative production insight to the visual storytelling process.

Since 2018, I have also written, directed, produced, and performed in seasonal productions for Redeeming Life Ministries International, particularly Easter and Christmas presentations that communicate the message of the Gospel through dramatic storytelling.

Everything I do—whether on stage, on screen, or in ministry—is driven by one purpose: to inspire, impact, and influence positive change in the lives of others.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the greatest challenges in my journey has been learning how to balance multiple responsibilities while still operating in a spirit of excellence. I work full time professionally while also serving in ministry and pursuing opportunities within the entertainment industry. Each of those areas carries its own level of responsibility, preparation, and commitment.

There were seasons when it required a great deal of discipline to ensure that no assignment was shortchanged. Whether it was fulfilling my professional responsibilities, preparing for ministry, rehearsing for productions, or contributing to film and creative projects, I have always been intentional about honoring every opportunity with excellence.

At the same time, I also had to learn the importance of caring for myself—mentally, spiritually, and physically—because sustaining that level of responsibility requires balance and wisdom.

What has helped me navigate those challenges is my faith and understanding that every opportunity I’ve been given is an assignment from God. When you approach your responsibilities with purpose, prayer, and discipline, you learn how to steward your time, your gifts, and your energy wisely.

Those experiences ultimately strengthened my character and reinforced my commitment to the purpose that drives everything I do: to inspire, impact, and influence positive change in the lives of others.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have over 30 years of experience in the federal government. I began my federal career as a student within the Department of Defense. After earning my bachelor’s degree, I was permanently converted to a career employee in 1996. From that point forward, I progressed through various levels of responsibility, earning promotions that ultimately led me to my current role as a Human Resources Manager.

Today, I oversee the disciplines of staffing and classification, where I lead recruitment efforts and classification development. My journey through the different functional areas of Human Resources has been both formative and rewarding, equipping me with the knowledge and perspective necessary to effectively lead within this field.

What I am most proud of in my career is the journey that led me to my managerial role. Achieving this position more than five years ago has not only advanced my professional career, but it has also cultivated personal growth that extends beyond my traditional work responsibilities.

What truly sets me apart is my commitment to remaining leadable, coachable, teachable, and trainable. Regardless of the level I achieve, I strive to remain humble and maintain the posture of a lifelong student. I believe that growth comes from a willingness to continually learn. Simply put, once I stop learning, I stop living.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I firmly believe that teamwork makes the dream work. I am a very team-oriented individual and believe that far more can be accomplished through collaboration than working in silos. However, for partnerships to be successful, it is essential that team members operate with openness, transparency, and mutual respect.

Depending on the nature of my involvement in a project, these principles are foundational to partnering with me. For those who may be interested in collaborating on future projects, I can be reached through my social media platforms on Facebook or Instagram at Denascia Salley.
