Today we’d like to introduce you to LaShea Lawson.
Hi LaShea, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
LaShae Design Company began from a place of purpose, not pressure. Sewing has always been present in my life—not because my mother was a professional seamstress, but because she knew how to sew and used that skill to care for us. She made clothes for my siblings and me when we were children, and years later, she even made a dress for me as an adult—one that I loved so much I wore it once a week for months. Watching her create with intention planted a seed, even though I didn’t realize it at the time.
Over the years, sewing became more than a practical skill for me. It turned into a creative outlet, a way to build confidence, and eventually a pathway to entrepreneurship. LaShae Design Company grew organically through custom work, alterations, and sewing education, allowing me to create something sustainable while staying rooted in craftsmanship and care.
As the business evolved, mental health became deeply personal through my family—particularly through my brother’s struggles. Supporting him during that season reshaped my understanding of faith, resilience, and healing. While mental health was not the reason the business launched, it became the inspiration behind the Faith Collection. That collection was created as a form of encouragement—a reminder that faith can be carried, worn, and felt during difficult moments.
Today, LaShae Design Company exists at the intersection of creativity, purpose, and compassion. Through apparel, sewing education, and intentional design, the brand aims to provide comfort and confidence while also helping to gently raise awareness around mental health and the importance of faith, hope, and community.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been a smooth road at all. Like many small business owners, one of the biggest challenges has been getting the business off the ground without consistent access to funding. Sewing is a skill-based industry, but it is also capital-intensive. Quality sewing machines, materials, and maintenance come at a high cost, and building a professional setup requires ongoing investment.
Marketing has also been a significant learning curve. Creating a great product is only one part of the journey—learning how to reach the right audience, build visibility, and tell your story in a crowded market takes time, resources, and persistence. There have been many seasons where I’ve had to do everything myself, simply because hiring reliable help wasn’t financially possible yet.
Some days, all I want to do is sew. Sewing is where I feel most grounded and creative. But running a business means wearing many hats—marketing, operations, finances, and decision-making—and there are times when stepping away from the sewing machine is necessary to keep the business moving forward.
Another challenge has been finding dependable support. Building a business requires trustworthy people, whether for production, collaboration, or guidance, and that doesn’t happen overnight. Every misstep becomes a lesson in discernment, patience, and resilience.
Despite the challenges, each obstacle has strengthened the foundation of the brand. The struggles reinforced why LaShae Design Company exists—to build something sustainable, intentional, and rooted in faith, perseverance, and purpose rather than shortcuts.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
At the core of my work, I am a designer, seamstress, and creative educator. Through LaShae Design Company, I specialize in custom apparel, faith-inspired ready-to-wear pieces, and sewing education. My work blends craftsmanship with intention—whether I’m creating a garment, teaching someone how to sew, or designing apparel meant to encourage and comfort.
What I’m most known for is creating pieces that go beyond aesthetics. My designs are rooted in meaning, faith, and real life. The Faith Collection, in particular, was created as a response to personal experiences with mental health within my family. It exists to offer encouragement and remind people that faith, strength, and hope can be carried—even worn—during difficult seasons.
What I’m most proud of is building a brand that honors both creativity and compassion. I didn’t take shortcuts, and I didn’t separate purpose from process. I’ve grown the business while learning, teaching, and creating simultaneously, often wearing many hats, but staying true to why I started.
What sets me apart is that my work is lived-in, not manufactured. Every piece reflects real experiences, faith, and resilience. I’m not just creating clothing—I’m creating space for healing, confidence, and expression. That balance of skill, storytelling, and intention is what defines my work and continues to guide where it’s going.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
As a Christian woman, my clothing is more than something to wear—it’s a statement and, in many ways, a testimony. I believe what we wear can reflect who we are and what we stand for. My designs are intentionally modest in appearance, but they’re also meant to spark meaningful conversations.
Through the Faith Collection, I aim to create clothing that quietly shares faith without being loud or performative. Each piece is designed to encourage, invite reflection, and open the door for connection—whether that conversation happens internally or with someone else. My hope is that when people wear my designs, they feel confident, covered, and reminded that faith can be expressed in everyday life.
